Tips to Prevent Thrombocytopenia

2Platelets are very tiny cells in your body that help in the clotting of the blood. When your platelet count is very low, tendencies are, your wounds or even minor cuts would not heal immediately because of excessive bleeding. If you are experiencing such bleeding, fatigue, bruising and rashes in different parts of your body, excessive menstrual bleeding, blood in your urine and stool or even bleeding of the gums and nose, you might have low platelet count or Thrombocytopenia. If you are not sure, you might need to ask your doctor how to know if your platelets are too low and if you need some medical treatment for your condition. Thrombocytopenia, when ignored, can lead to more serious disorders because of bleeding and can sometimes cause mortality. For you to make sure that your platelet count remains normal, be sure to follow these tips.

Tip 1: Reduce Alcohol Intake

Beer, hard liquor and some other alcoholic beverages can harm your bone marrow. The bone marrow is responsible in the production of platelets, as well as other blood cells, in your system. If your bone marrow is damaged, it would not function properly and would slow down or completely inhibit the platelet production. Studies show that people who had too much to drink experienced a sudden drop on their platelet count.

Tip 2: Be Careful When Handling Toxic Chemicals

Certain chemicals such as benxene, arsenic and pesticides can slow the production of platelets. You would need to be extra careful when handling them and be sure to use necessary safety gear when working with them.

Tip 3: Consult Your Doctor First Before Taking Any Medication

Some over the counter medicine like aspirin, Advil and more can thin your blood. Other stronger medication can destroy the platelets. And drugs that are used in chemotherapy and to cure some seizures can hinder the bone marrow from producing platelets. You would need to ask your doctor if it is safe for you to take certain medication, especially if you have problems with your platelets.
Tip 4: Boost Your Immune System

Thrombocytopenia is mostly caused by some diseases. By boosting your immune system, you would be able to stay away from any illness or infection. You can do this by eating the right foods, getting enough sleep, exercising and taking vaccine shots. It would be best to prevent such diseases from occuring, rather than treating them when it’s already too late.

Tip 5: Increase Intake on Certain Foods

If you think that you have low platelet count, or if your doctor tells you that you have mild thrombocytopenia, you would need to add some certain foods in your diet to help increase the level of your platelet count. Foods that are rich in vitamin K, folate, vitamin C, iron, B12, and probiotics are the most recommended. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, too. And avoid eating processed foods with artificial ingredients and lots of sugar. As much as possible, try not to take any food with Omega 3 in it when your platelet count is low because it could inhibit the production and activation of platelets.
