What to Look for in Selecting a Jigsaw

Published June 27, 2019 in Uncategorized

You will find a jigsaw in all workshops but selecting one is not only a challenge but also can take a lot of time. Having mentioned that, I will now list everything you need to consider in selecting your jigsaw. In addition, I will list the top jigsaws in 2019 to make your selection easier.

Features to look for

1. Orbital Action. Unlike the standard jigsaws, the blades of the orbital jigsaw move somewhat forward to the workpiece on the upswing and marginally backward on the down stroke and reset for the next cutting stroke.

2. Variable speed. A jigsaw that can be adjusted to both high and low speeds can work best in woodwork, metal cutting, and making intricate curved cuts.

3. Motor power. The more the motor power, the more the cutting power. Motor rating of 6.5 to 7 amps is the best.

4. Depth of Cut. Depending on the desired depth of cut, select either a jigsaw with a deep or shallow cut.

5. Corded or cordless jigsaws. Depending on the nature of work, you will decide which one to select, but if you work in a fixed workshop, the corded is your best option, but if you have many options, you can consider a cordless.

6. Scrolling Saws. This allows the blade to roll while cutting to make it easier to cut along curves. However, this feature comes with challenges making many woodworkers consider it unnecessary.

7. Laser Guide Line. This feature helps in maintaining a straight cut by making a thin red cutting line.

8. Dust Blower. Some jigsaw has blowers that blow a stream of air ahead of the blade to remove dust and make the cutting line visible.

9. Shoe Bevel. It allows the jigsaws to have adjustable shoes which help to angle the tool for bevel cuts. Also, the Toolless Blade Change. This allows lever-action blade change without the use of an extra tool.

10. Other features you can consider include the splinter control shoe, a trigger lock, and a dust collection bag.
